However, some experts argue that VoIP refers to delivering voice communication via an IP network. IP telephony, on the other hand, is a broad umbrella word that refers to any telephone-type communication service delivered via the Internet, including faxing, text messaging, and other services.
Furthermore, some observers point out that the word IP telephony is most commonly used in a business context, referring to the software and technology that supports VoIP services, despite the fact that VoIP is widely used in both business and consumer environments.
What is IP telephony, and how does it work?

Instead, IP telephony technology turns phone conversations, faxes, and text messages into data packets that flow across computer network connections, bypassing PSTN fees.

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, a set of standardised technologies for delivering voice communications . Over the internet or a private IP-based network. VoIP is voice over IP only in the strictest sense of the term — a subset of IP telephony that excludes other, non-voice-based communication . services like faxing or text messaging. However, it’s perfectly OK to use the phrases VoIP and IP telephony interchangeably, as many people do.
VoIP and IP telephony have a lot of advantages.
Prior to VoIP and IP telephony, businesses had to set up and operate two networks: one for phone conversations and another for internet access. With voice and data convergence, an organisation only requires one network to provide both phone and LAN services.

Regardless, the problem is to reliably send phone, fax, video, and text packets to users who rely on internet connectivity. A bad network connection can degrade call quality, and a service outage would often shut off the service completely. Fixed-line phones, on the other hand, should continue to function even if there is a widespread power outage.

The protocol specifies the format of messages to exchanged and the order. In which they must communicated in order for the participants. SIP is a text-based protocol that incorporates several features of both HTTP and the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) (SMTP).  A SIP call can have numerous media streams, however, for apps that transmit data as payload in the SIP message.
